Creating theatre right now is a weird thing to do. As an art form that is so much about intimacy, connection and sharing a unique experience with a large group, this pandemic has made engaging in work like this difficult, if not impossible. That’s part of what drew me to this play. Yes, it’s about Dungeons & Dragons (which I love deeply) and, yes, it’s a rare, quality piece written for kids this age, but more than that, it felt very immediate to me. This is a play about coping with unexpected loss. It’s about people being separated suddenly and finding new ways to connect and learn about each other. It’s about transcending your perceived limitations to do incredible things in surprising ways. Most of all, it’s about accepting what you can’t change, and finding healing, joy and adventure in what’s around you. That’s what moves me in this show. Seeing discoveries being made and connections being formed. The ways in which the actors, like the characters, helped each other to grow, adapt, and have fun in a new and strange world. The process of putting this together has been harrowing and uncertain, to say the least. But the community we found in this cast and the ways in which we were still able to create in spite of everything felt magical. We hope you’re able to find some of that adventure, magic and fun with us. —Sim
