Meet the Cast: Jake Wernecke, "The Beast"
Meet the cast of Beauty and the Beast, playing at Children's Theatre of Annapolis from January 12-28, 2018!
Jake Wernecke, a 17-year-old 12th-grader in Severna Park plays the character of The Beast.
What do you love about your character?
My favorite thing about the Beast is how he really changes as a character throughout the show from a mean, selfish person to revealing his kindness and humanity by the end of the musical.
Why did you want to be involved in this production?
I mainly wanted to be involved in this production because I have never been involved with a show at CTA, and I have a special connection to Beauty and The Beast. I was Lumiere in my fifth-grade production of this show, and it was such a great experience.
What is your favorite song in the show?
My favorite song in the show is "Home." Sarah Kalafos (Belle) sings it so well, and her voice lends itself really well to the song. It is such a heartfelt song, and I love the message.
If you could play any other character in the show, who would it be?
Gaston is such an interesting role to me because he is the exact antithesis of Beast. He begins as an arrogant fool who is smitten with Belle, and ultimately shows his own shortcomings and that he is really an evil person.
What's your favorite thing about playing your character?
I like playing Beast because of the transformation from being a mean, unhappy person to someone that can truly find love.
What do you do when you are not doing theatre?
I primarily do homework when I’m not doing theatre, and I also spend time with my friends and family in my free time.
When did you first perform on stage?
I first performed on stage as Mr. Buckett in Charlie and The Chocolate Factory in elementary school.
What is your favorite show outside of this show and why?
I absolutely love Into The Woods, because the parts and the story are so interesting and complex. Despite it being a fantasy, it lends itself well to providing some insights into our own life right now.
