Meet the cast of Beauty and the Beast, playing at Children's Theatre of Annapolis from January 12-28, 2018!
Sarah Kalafos, who plays Belle, is a 15-year-old sophomore at Severna Park High School.
What do you love about your character?
I think it’s really cool that Belle is ahead of her time in a way that she doesn’t care about social standards and isn’t afraid to go against them in order to do what she loves.
Why did you want to be in this production?
Most of the things I’ve done recently have been just singing and dancing, and I think I really missed being able to explore a character and delve deeper into the work. I also knew that CTA is such a positive environment for people to grow and be able to reach out of their comfort zones (plus, who doesn’t love Beauty and the Beast!?)
What is your favorite song in the show?
That’s a tough one but I am going to have to go with "Gaston," just because it’s super-high energy and the silly girls make me laugh every time.
If you could play any other character in the show, who would it be?
Lefou is honestly one of my dream roles. He gets to sing, dance, and provides comic relief throughout the whole show. What’s not to love?
What's your favorite thing about playing your character?
Playing Belle is really interesting because she experiences so many emotions in the run of a two-hour show. I think that the fact that no one understands her and her feeling isolated from everyone in her town can be very relatable for people of all ages and backgrounds, but especially teenagers.
What do you do when you're not doing theatre?
When I’m not performing I’m most likely doing homework or hanging out with my friends and family. I like baking, but I’m not too good at it. I’m also a Disney movie fanatic.
When did you first perform on stage?
When I was little, my neighbors and I would put on "The Wizard of Oz" what seemed to be everyday. Long story short, I did a summer camp in third grade and got basketball player number 4 in "High School Musical." I’ve been in love ever since!
What is your favorite stage show, and why?
I really like A Chorus Line and Songs for a New World but for completely different reasons. They are both just really fun to watch and listen to!
