Meet the Cast: Michael Stafford, "Gaston"
Meet the cast of Beauty and the Beast, playing at Children's Theatre of Annapolis through January 28, 2018!
Michael Stafford is a 16-year-old sophomore at Annapolis High School. He plays Gaston.
What do you love about your character?
I love Gaston because he is an absolutely ridiculous human. He is a character you can easily convince yourself to hate, but you can’t help love his goofiness and slapstick humor with Le Fou.
Why did you want to be involved in this production?
I knew I wanted to be in a CTA show after a few of my friends convinced me to audition, one of who was Zoë Argabright, who is in the cast as well.
What is your favorite song in the show? My favorite song in the show is definitely "Gaston’s Reprise." It is very fun and a little challenging to sing and is very over the top. It has a dark meaning presented in a light manner which is the foundation of Gaston’s character.
If you could play any other character in the show, who would it be? I would want to play Lumière if I could play any other role. He has so much fun in dancing and singing, and it would be very fun to act out the ridiculous french man.
What's your favorite thing about playing your character? I love acting Gaston’s ability to be completely over the top. Usually you don’t want to be overacting or way too dramatic on stage, but Gaston requires a bit of both which makes him very fun to play.
What do you do when you are not doing theatre?
When I’m not doing theatre, I usually am playing music in the Annapolis High School Band or my own band. I also spend time with my friends playing video games and such.
When did you first perform on stage? I first performed on a stage when I was in kindergarten, but I’m pretty sure that was mandatory. My first show I participated in willingly was in fourth grade where I played Monsieur D’Arque in Beauty and The Beast. Funny to think that where I started is where I am now.
What is your favorite show outside of this show and why?
My favorite show I’ve performed in was West Side Story at Annapolis High. It was very challenging for dancing and singing, but after we finished I was very proud of my work and that people enjoyed the show.
